I dare you …
In the way that I approach flash photography - even on-camera flash photography - the idea is to have flash blend seamlessly with the available light. In fact, to try and make the flash appear ‘invisible’ to the final image.
So here’s a challenge - here are 10 images, 5 of which are purely available light, and 5 of which have flash to some extent. Let’s see if anyone can pick out which are which. And to make it more interesting, I’m willing to offer a prize or two to someone who figures it all out correctly.

The rules:
1 - For each image say simply “flash” or “no flash” and post your reply to the blog, although you’re welcome to add comments to your post if you wish. You must identify all 10 images to be eligible to win.
2 - You may respond once only. If you respond multiple times, only your FIRST response will be used.
3 - At the end of the contest, the 2 winners will be chosen by a random drawing from the responses that get all 10 images correct.
4 - If no one gets all 10 correct, then the winners will be chosen from those people who get the most correct answers.There will be 2 prizes:
1st prize - free admission to any Full Day Workshop that I’m presenting this year
~or~ either a Nikon SB-800 or Canon 580EX II speedlight
2nd prize - free admission to any Seminar (morning session) this year,
~or~ either a Nikon SD-8A or Canon CP-E4 battery pack.(Unfortunately, I will have to limit the prizes to USA responses only,
but anyone is welcome to give it a shot and reply to this challenge.)
I’ll let this challenge run until next Sunday, Aug 3, and announce the two winners that evening.
(I’ve brought the deadline closer, since it was pointed out to me that 2 weeks is a lifetime in internet years!)

Call me gutsy, but I’ll try and back up my responses here with a little inexpert analysis. I’ll probably be a little ways off the mark, but I’d like to know just how close my guesses are :-).
1. FLASH- This one looks like it could be from one of your postings about dragging the shutter to blur the subject while using flash to freeze it in sharp clarity.
2. NO FLASH - If you can control an on-camera flash that well when it’s aimed behind you, my hats off to you, friend. Seeing that the eyes on this somewhat posed shot are a little dark and you generally seem to use some fill, I’d say you went with the general mirror shot that has some interesting angles.
3. NO FLASH - The faces are rather dark in shadow, and no catchpoints for fill…
4. NO FLASH - I don’t see what you could have bounced the flash off of, and the subjects eyes are or other reflective surfaces are too small to see any catchpoints. The flower girls’ dresses cast a shadow in front of them at various angles, not behind.
5. NO FLASH - This one comes from a post you did on trying to blur background subjects in motion while keeping sharp focus on the subjects. The sharpness (in the street photo you discussed) comes from using the your best shot of them blended with your favorite background from a series. Besides, what little bounced light there might bet there (not coming from show sources) would have to have been bounced off the train. Likely? I think not ;-).
6. NO FLASH - It looks like you either had the subject by a tall window or you used a soft box. That light looks way to diffused to have been bounced or aimed directly from a small light source, and it just might be unidirectional as you would get from sunlight. There is no catch point on the eyes to indicate a fill flash.
7. FLASH - It looks like there was mixed sunlight and incandescent (seen in light color and shadow makeup), but I’d have to say you used a slight direct flash to lift the shadows on the eyes. I wonder which gel K you tended towards for that…
8. FLASH - My cues here are the light falling towards the front on the brides face (whereas groom’s is shaded) and the conspicuous lightening on the gilt of the mirror and the lightening of the dark wall near the area. This doesn’t seem to be coming from the chandelier shown in the mirror. I’d say you bounced it off the ceiling in this instance. Btw, good job on getting the gel to match the available light, you’ve cooled all of those incandescent lights down to where there’s not such a stark contrast of cool colors (wall) and warm light on the whites of the subjects.
9. FLASH - The slight highlight and angle thereof on the grooms forehead and the fill on the eyes of the bride, both pure white in color indicate to me that there was some flash used.
10. FLASH - On this one, I’m torn. Since it’s the last one, I’ll have to go with this answer. For it to be flash, you must have been practically straight over the subject using a bracket.

Neil,

1 - From man’s left eye, I see 1 flash camera left + reflector at top + background flash
2 - The color of light source at top left of the picture look like light bulb, and no other light source shown on the picture.
3 - This one I am guessing. Flash bound from camera’s left to reduce the contrast.
4 - Guessing again. Don’t know where is the flash, but hard to believe it can be done with just available light
5 - The couple is right under the available light. Also, the train shows no sign of flash reflection.
6 - From man’s eye, I see camera left flash, right reflector
7 - Guessing again. This is the hardest for me.
8 - I see 2 flash reflections, 1 left, and 1 right at around leg level.
9 - A little guessing too. Since it is outdoor, flash doesn’t have enough power for bound. If direct flash for fill, the wedding ring should show some flash reflection.
10 - No sign of bound flash or direct flash.

I think flash should be used in EVERY picture
Number 1 is obviously flashed, but I think this is a trick picture and say no flash but a window light.
Number 2 has 2 different color temperatures on the wall. One from flash, one from tungsten.
Number 3 looks very window light to me. No shine, no strange hidden reflections - could be another trick photo.
Number 4 should be an all ambient shot, but this is also the same result you would get from a right sided bounce.
Number 5 people in the background are lit just like the couple, it would be hard to light every person the same way. Also the overhead lights look to be producing the correct pattern I would expect to see on the couple and the people in the back.
Number 6 looks to be obviously a studio softbox light camera left. i will say though it is an open door instead or an open garage door.
Number 7 is a tough one. I see 2 sets of shadows, but one color temp. Even a gel would cause a slight difference. So I am thinking an overhead light and another light camera right but it is a window light or open door way. This is a tough one.
Number 8 I can see the ceiling and back wall lit by the flash and also a reflection in the wood of the frame at the top and left side. Left side can be the fixture, but not the other stuff.
Number 9 can be either as it is camera right directional. I go with natural light for the vote. Flash can do the very same though.
Number 10 This is another tough one. I will go with flash being shot either behind from off camera flash or over the top of her totally aiming up but behind her with an ABBC Pro gobo type unit.

1.Flash – from the reflections in his eyes
2.Ambient- guess that they’re in front of a window
3.Ambient- window light again
4.Flash – cuz it’s normally used in a recessional
5.Ambient- cause I skipped around and used up all my flash choices
6.Ambient – window, lest you have a 6’ softbox
7.Flash – bounced far from camera left
8.Flash – cuz that room looks way too dark to use ambient
9.Ambient – they look like they’re outside or in a doorway
